Women's Self Defence and Situational Awareness - Group Program
OVAIT facilitates an eight-week Women's Self Defence and Situational Awareness Group program, which is aimed at both increasing situational awareness and learning techniques that support, inform, train, and most importantly empower women.
The techniques are based on Brazilian Jit Jitsu and the principles of leverage, timing, and energy efficiency, meaning anyone can do them regardless of age or athletic ability.
A male co-facilitator allows the attendees to see the techniques work!
Beyond the physical techniques, the program reinforces situational awareness, risk assessment, and verbal and psychological strategies women can use to set boundaries and feel safe.
The group setting is a fun and safe environment where women can connect with other like-minded women.
The program can also be delivered in a shorter format (1-hour, 2-hour, 4-hour, or full-day session) at your location or ours and our facilitator can travel nationally to facilitate the program.
Women's Self Defense and Situational Awareness - Bendigo FAQs
Why self defence classes? What will I get out of it?
Learning self-defence empowers you in ways that go far beyond preventing assault. Self-defence training will decrease your fear and anxiety and increase your confidence, sense of self-efficacy, and self-esteem. Learning self-defence helps you feel stronger and more confident in your bodies. Women report more comfortable interactions with strangers, acquaintances, and intimates, both in situations that seem dangerous and those that do not.
What should I wear?
We suggest wearing comfortable exercise clothes – tights and t-shirt are ideal.
Do I need to bring anything?
We suggest bringing a water bottle and a notebook.
Do I need to be fit to do the sessions?
No, self-defence is far more then just physical attributes. It is accessible to all women no matter your age, race, level of fitness or physical ability.
Can my kids join in the sessions?
The sessions are designed for teenage girls (over 13 years of age) to women of any age.
What if I have an injury?
Our experienced Facilitators will work with you and your injury. With small class sizes, they will tailor the sessions to meet your needs. Please tell the Facilitator at the commencement of the session about any injuries.
Can I just do one class?
The eight sessions build on each other. Whilst you will develop some skills and knowledge by attending individual classes, the sessions are tailored to build on the last session. We recommend attending all eight sessions.
What if I want to learn more after the initial eight sessions?
Please chat to the Facilitator about how you can continue to develop your self defence and situational awareness skills. OVAIT also offers an intermediate self defence program for those who want to learn more and continue their journey.
What if the sessions trigger past events or memories and cause me distress?
The Facilitator is an experienced Mental Health Practitioner and will be there to support you.
How much is the program, when is payment due and how do I make payment?
The program is $20 per session with payment due at the start of the session by EFTPOS or cash (if paying cash, please bring exact money). BUT the first class is always FREE! Come and try the program at no cost.
Where and when is the program held?
The program is held on a Wednesday night from 7pm to 8pm at our office in the Bendigo CBD.
